Blue Plaque

Donald Watson – Blue Plaque Unveiling

A blue plaque is to be unveiled at the New Pastures Primary School (Formerly Pit Street School) on Saturday November 9th at 12.00, in honour of Donald Watson, the Mexborough Man who was instrumental in the development of veganism and a founder member of The Vegan Society. The unveiling has been timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the founding of The Vegan Society in November 1944.

Watson Attended Pitt Street school and Mexborough Grammar School (Now the Business Centre) in his childhood. He was born in 1910 and became a vegetarian at the age of 14 after witnessing the slaughter of a pig at his Uncle George’s farm. He gave up dairy produce some 18 years later after having decided that milk production was also unethical.

All are welcome to come along and witness the unveiling, which will be carried out by current members of The Vegan Society , and to join us for a vegan buffet at the Business Centre afterwards.

The plaque is one of several unveiled recently, and it is envisaged that there are more to come, the aim being to have a Mexborough Heritage Trail encompassing all the plaques and other points of interest in a walk around the area on which people can enjoy the rich history of the area and contribution its people have made to national life.
