The History of Manvers Complex

Less than 40 years ago, the biggest industrial operation in Europe stood right on our doorstep. Join us for a talk from local historian Giles Brearley on the company and its operating history from the land being first acquired to the eventual fateful closure nearly 140 years later. With details on the social history of the miners themselves and the comradeship between the men manifested right from the start and how it grew in importance over the decades, the talk includes previously unseen photographs of the mining operations and its vast expansion.

This time it is the turn of Albert Fox, a former Mexborough Loco-man who eventually became ASLEF General Secretary between 1901 and1914.  The unveiling will take place in Mexborough station waiting room on Wednesday 4th September at 2.00pm. Mick Whelan the current General Secretary of ASLEF will be present. All are very welcome to attend.

The Mexborough Heritage Society Blue Plaque committee is working hard to have a number of plaques installed in the area with the eventual aim of having a “Blue Plaques Trail” which people can follow, combining a good walk with a celebration of the area and its people.
