The first talk of the new season at the Concertina club will be on the Topic of WH Chambers who was once known as the King of Denaby.
Chambers was the Managing Director of the Denaby and Cadeby Collieries Ltd from the beginning of the 20thCentury until just after the First World War. A period which included technological development, hardship, bitter strikes and a terrible pit disaster.
Some saw him as a philanthropist who did his best to look after the interests of those who worked for him. Others saw him as a pitiless employer interested only in maximising profit at any cost.
